You must consult your doctor before taking Avloclor to determine if it is suitable for you, depending on where you are travelling to.

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to chloroquine phosphate or any other ingredient. Inform your doctor if you have had epilepsy, liver or kidney problems, porphyria, psoriasis, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Also let your doctor know of any other medication you are on at the time.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or may become pregnant, talk to your doctor before taking Avloclor or any other medicine to prevent malaria.

When taking the medicine, also try to reduce the chances of being bitten by mosquitoes by wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved clothes and use insect repellents.

Avloclor may cause side effects in some individuals.

Common side effects include;
- Stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Headache
- Convulsions or fits
- Skin rash like psoriasis
- Changes in hair color
- Blurred eyesight
- Hearing loss
- Liver problems
- Low RBC count

If you experience severe allergic reactions causing difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, seek medical help straightaway.

Avloclor should be taken exactly as advised by the doctor. For prevention of malaria, start taking this medicine once week before you enter the affected place. You must continue taking it during your stay, until 4 weeks after leaving the area.

For adults and children over 14 years of age, the usual dose is two tablets once a week on the same day each week. The dose might differ from elderly people. It is not suitable for children under 1 year of age.

Take the tablet after food and swallow it whole with water.

If you take more tablets than you should, consult your doctor immediately. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, then wait seven days before you take the next dose and carry on thereafter. Do not stop unless you have completed the course or your doctor asks you to stop.

Avloclor tablets contain chloroquine phosphate, which is an antimalarial. Malaria is caused by parasites known as Plasmodium, which are carried by mosquitoes and injected into the bloodstream when bitten by an infected mosquito. Chloroquine works by attacking the parasites once they have entered the red blood cells, it kills them and prevents them from multiplying further.
