Azithromycin

Azithromycin belongs to a group of medicines known as macrolide antibiotics, which is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, such as chlamydia or other infections of the lungs, throat, nose and soft tissue. The chief active ingredient is azithromycin dihydrate.

Azithromycin is used to treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis and chlamydia.

You should not take Azithromycin if you are allergic to azithromycin hydrochloride or any of its other ingredients. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine, if you have severe liver, kidney or heart problems, low levels of potassium or magnesium, if you suffer from muscle weakness of have nervous or mental problems.

Inform your doctor of any other medication you might be on currently, or if you are intolerant to some sugars, as Azithromycin contains lactose.

For women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult the doctor before starting on this treatment.

There are a few common side effects associated with the use of Azithromycin, however, not everyone will experience these. Common side effects include;
- Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea
- Lack of appetite,
- Headache,
- Visual impairment,
- Fatigue

If you experience severe side effects such as severe breathing problem, swelling of lips and face, dizziness, or skin rashes you should immediately stop taking the medicine and consult your GP.

Azithromycin should always be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Never exceed or reduce the dosage without consultation.

Take Azithromycin with water, with or without food.

For adults and young people weighing over 45kgs, a dose of 500mg per day is prescribed for a duration of 3 days. This medicine is not prescribed for children or young people weighing less than 45kgs.

In case you have taken too much of Azithromycin, you should immediately consult your GP. An overdose may cause symptoms such as diarrhoea or feeling sick. If you forget a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember, in case it is time for the next dose you can continue with the regular schedule. You should never take a double dose of Azithromycin to make up for the missed dose.

Always complete the full course of this medicine to prevent the infection from recurring. Do not stop the medication midway.
