Femoston is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It has two types of female hormones, an oestrogen and a progestogen. Femoston is used for relief of menopausal symptoms and prevention of developing fragile bones in the body. This condition is also known as osteoporosis. Like all other medicines, Femoston also has some side effects. Do not use Femoston if you ever had breast cancer, ovarian cancer, unexplained bleeding, an excessive thickening of the womb, a blood clot in the vein, clotting disorder, liver disease or are allergic to any ingredients of the medicine. Also, it contains lactose. Thus, if you are intolerant to certain sugars, inform your doctor. The medicine must be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Also, your doctor must know if you are or were under any kind of medication. The doctor will prescribe a minimum dosage to minimise the effect of the symptoms. If you are still having your periods, you should start taking the tablets on the fifth day of bleeding. If you are not having periods or are switching from one type of HRT to another, you can start taking your tablets on any day. Take one tablet every day without a break between the packs. Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food. The lowest dose will be prescribed to you by the doctor. The usual starting dose is 1 tablet of 1-2 mg strength daily for 1 to 14 days of the cycle .During 15 to 28 days of the cycle, 1 tablet of 1-2mg strength and 10mg dydrogesterone must be taken. You can start the next treatment after the 28th day. The dosage is printed on the pack for easy use. In case you take more tablets than required, inform your doctor immediately. In case you forget your dosage, take within 12 hours. Do not take double doses. Missing a tablet or irregular use of the tablets may cause unscheduled bleeding or spotting. You might need to stop taking Femoston 4 to 6 weeks before you undergo any surgery so that it reduces the risk of blood clot.
