FSH

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a reproductive hormone, released by the pituitary gland. It stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles in women that produce oestrogen and progesterone in the ovaries to maintain the menstrual cycle in women. In men, FSH is responsible for the production of sperm.

An FSH test is ordered when reproductive or pituitary disorders are suspected. Women have this test to confirm a diagnosis for menopause, when experiencing the following symptoms; - Irregular periods - Vaginal dryness - Hot flushes - Disturbed sleep - Mood changes - Weight gain - Thinning of hair - Loss of breast fullness

An FSH test includes a blood test to measure the amount of follicle-stimulating hormone present in a blood sample. Levels of FSH rise in women as egg production in the ovaries decline, indicating reduced egg supply and the onset of menopause.

We will send you your FSH finger-prick blood test sample collection kit. It contains instructions with all the equipment you will need to take your blood sample in the comfort of your home. However, if you are unsure about a finger-prick blood sample collection, you can opt for a clinic-based blood sample collection.

Your test kit includes 1st class postage and packaging for you to send your blood sample directly to our laboratory for analysis. If you want to ensure your sample arrives at the laboratory the following day itself, you may send your blood sample through guaranteed next day delivery.

Our medical team at ‘The Online Surgery’ will provide a full report of your FSH test results within four hours of receiving your sample with follow-up advice if necessary. FSH levels vary based on your gender, age and the stage of menstrual cycle a woman is in. High levels of FSH may indicate; - A loss of ovarian function - Menopause - Polycystic ovarian syndrome, where a woman’s hormones are out of balance causing ovarian cysts - Reduction in the production of good quality eggs for fertilisation. Low levels of FSH may indicate; - A woman isn’t producing eggs - The pituitary gland, which produces FSH, isn’t functioning properly The amount of FSH varies throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle and is highest just before she ovulates. Stress and being underweight may also affect your FSH values.
