Kliofem

Kliofem is a continuous combined hormone replace therapy (HRT) tablets used in postmenopausal women who have not had their natural period for at least last 12 months. It should be taken daily without any interruption.

The medicine is taken to ease the postmenopausal symptoms. Kliofem contains a combination of two female hormones, estradiol (oestrogen) and norethisterone acetate (progesterone). These hormones act in a similar way as the natural oestrogen and progesterone produced by the female body.

Kliofem contains 2 mg and 1 mg of two hormones known as estradiol and norethisterone acetate respectively. The first one is a type of oestrogen which is similar to the one made in the ovaries and the second one is a progesterone, which acts similar to the natural hormone progesterone. During menopause, the amount of oestrogen produced by a woman’s body declines and it can result in a variety of undesirable symptoms such as, hot face, neck or chest. Kliofem is prescribed by the doctors to alleviate these symptoms after menopause only if the symptoms are severe enough to interfere with the daily life activities and routine. After menopause, some women complain of osteoporosis. This condition is marked by the occurrence of weak bones and the risk of fractures is increased significantly. Kliofem helps to prevent osteoporosis after menopause. The medicine is prescribed to those females whose periods stopped more than a year ago and the womb is not removed. In case you have fibroids in the womb, gallstones, diabetes, migraine, epilepsy, asthma, otosclerosis, triglycerides, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), increased risk of developing clots, growth of the womb lining, high blood pressure, fluid retention due to kidney or cardiac problems, then tell your GP about these problems before starting with this medicine. These conditions may become severe or return during the treatment with Kliofem. This medicine is not suitable for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

There are a few side effects associated with the use of Kliofem. However, not all women are affected by them. Some very common side effects which may affect one in 10 people are breast pain, breast tenderness, vaginal bleeding, weight gain, headache, leg pain, vaginal inflammation, vaginal infection with a fungus, back pain, leg cramps, nausea, depression, abdominal pain or discomfort, fluid retention, uterine fibroid (benign) and swelling of arms and legs. A very few women using HRT may rarely complain of a few diseases like, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, heart disease and blood clots that may form in the veins of the lungs or legs. Females who begin the medicine after 65 years of age may suffer from memory loss. Stop taking the medicine and consult the doctor immediately in case you experience an allergic reaction, flatulence, bloating, itching, hives, inflammation of a vein, nervousness, heartburn, decrease in weight, vomiting, insomnia, dizziness or a change in sexual desire.

Kliofem should be taken as prescribed by your GP. Always consult the doctor or pharmacist in case you are not sure. Consume one tablet every day with a glass of water. You should take the tablet at a particular time each day. Decide on a time which is easy to remember. Take the tablet as per the calendar pack. It contains tablets for 28 days. As soon as you finish one pack you can begin with the other on the next day. The treatment can begin on any appropriate day, but if you are switching from HRT product during your monthly bleeding, then begin the medicine when the bleeding ends. The general practitioner will provide lowest dose to treat the symptoms, however, if you feel the dose is strong or not so strong then speak with the practitioner. In case you take more Kliofem than prescribed, consult your GP as taking more oestrogens can cause nausea, breast tenderness, metrorrhagia, vomiting and irregular vaginal bleeding. If you forget to take the medicine at a particular time, then take the medicine within the next 12. Else, you can start from the regular time of the next day. But, it is not advised to take two tablets together to compensate for the forgotten dose. To stop the medicine, speak with the GP to understand the effects of stopping the treatment. Do not take a decision by yourself.

Kliofem tablet contains two kinds of hormones, one is oestrogen and the other one is norethisterone acetate, which acts similar to one’s own body hormone progesterone. The medicine is taken during menopause, when the amount of oestrogen produced by a woman’s body drops. The fall in the levels of oestrogen may cause symptoms like hot face, neck, or chest, irritability, mood swings, vaginal dryness and changes in sexual desire, which can affect the daily life of a woman. Kliofem works by increasing the levels of oestrogen in your body so that the severity of the symptoms associated with menopause in reduced. An uncontrolled increase in the levels of oestrogen may sometimes thicken the walls of the uterus, a condition that might lead to the cancer of the womb. The progesterone contained in the medicine works by keeping the amount of oestrogen in check. It thus helps reduce the risk of womb cancer in women taking this drug after menopause. If you need to undergo a surgery, inform your surgeon about your intake of Kliofem as you may need to stop taking the medicine about 4 to 6 weeks prior to the operation to reduce the risk of blood clots in a vein. Ask your GP when you can begin taking the medicine again.
