The contraceptive pill is the most effective method of fertility control, effective 99% of times if used correctly. It is the most commonly used method of contraception for women across all ages. However it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
There are two main types of contraceptive pills;
Combined Hormonal Contraceptive Pill
Combined oral contraceptives contain small doses of oestrogen and progesterone hormones. They inhibit the body’s natural cyclical hormones, preventing pregnancy. They also work to reduce side effects associated with menstrual disorders.
Progesterone-only pills change the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the cervix and also inhibit ovulation in some women. These are taken daily, with no break.
It is not advisable for women who are pregnant, breast-feeding or have just given birth to take contraceptive pills.
