Avodart capsules contain dutasteride, which belongs to group of medicines known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It is prescribed to treat men with an enlarged prostate gland, leading to urinary problems.
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dutasteride or any other ingredient, or if you have severe liver disease.
When taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicine at the time as some medicine can react with Avodart. This medicine is suitable for men only, it must not be taken by women, children or adolescents, and use a condom during sexual intercourse.
Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or may be pregnant, must avoid handling the capsules, as the active ingredient can be absorbed through the skin.
Avodart may cause side effects for some people.
Common side effects include; - Not being able to achieve or maintain an erection - Decreased sex drive - Difficulty with ejaculation - Breast enlargement or tenderness - Dizziness
If you experience side effects such as a skin rash, hives, swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, arms or legs, you must stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
Avodart is to be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
The recommended dose is one capsule of 0.5 mg taken once in a day. The capsule must be swallowed whole, with a glass of water. Do not chew or break open the capsule.
While some men notice an early-improvement in their symptoms, others may need to take Avodart for 6 months or more. Do not stop taking the medicine unless your doctors asks you to.
If you take more tablets than you were prescribed, contact your doctor for advice. In case you miss a dose, continue with the next dose at the usual time, do not take a double dose to compensate.
