Periods can often be quite inconvenient to experience, especially when you would like to travel or partake in a sporting event or hobby. It can be a nuisance to deal with, especially for women who find it painful and hence limiting.

Many women wish to delay their periods at such times. This can be done with an effective prescription medicine, given you are not already on a different form of fertility control treatment.

It is not advisable for women who are pregnant, breast feeding or taking the contraceptive pill to prescribe to period delay medicines

To delay your periods, we can prescribe Norethisterone. Our GPs will assess your suitability before prescribing the medication to you.

It is a prescription pill that can delay your period up to 17 days.

You should start taking the pill three days before your period if due and can continue taking it for a maximum of 20 days. You will get your period two to three days after you have stopped taking it.

Norethisterone contains the female hormone progesterone. It works by artificially keeping your natural progesterone levels up, which stops the lining of your womb from shedding and delays your period.

This treatment should not be taken regularly, or used as a contraceptive.
