Always use the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The medicine must be taken at the same time every day. The medicine must be swallowed quickly and must not be kept in the mouth for a long time. The solution can be taken undiluted or diluted in some liquid. Lactulose can be taken with or without food. There are no restrictions on food or drink except alcohol. It can take 2-3 days for the medicine to work effectively. For children from 7 to 14 years of age the recommended starting dose and the maintenance dose is 15 ml daily.
The recommended starting dose for adults is 15-45 ml daily and the maintenance dose is 15-30 ml daily. The dosage may be reduced in the later changes. However, no special dosage is recommended in the elderly and patients suffering from kidney or liver diseases.
In case, you take an overdose of the medicine you may suffer from diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Consult a doctor immediately. In case, you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Never take two doses at a time to make up for the missed dose. It is best to inform your doctor before stopping the medicine.
Lactulose is an oral solution which contains a laxative called lactulose. It makes the stools softer and easier to pass, by filling the bowel with water. It is not absorbed into the body. It is used to treat symptoms of constipation.
